Five Productivity Tips for the Busy Self Storage Manager

Looking for some new ways to get the most out of your busy work day? Follow these five productivity tips and you will be working smarter (not harder) in no time.

Tip #1: Have a Gracious Attitude

Have an "attitude of gratitude". A positive attitude will not help you do anything, but it will help you do everything better than a negative attitude will (-Zig Ziglar). Gratitude is one of the healthiest of all human emotions. Having a positive attitude and being grateful for all the good things in your life will make the cloudiest day seem sunny. You will treat your customers so much better and they will likely remember the positive experience and tell others about it. Happy customers who have a great experience will usually tell 4-6 people about it – but an unhappy customer is likely to tell 9-15.

Tip #2: Make Goals

It is important to have goals. You cannot hit a target that you cannot see. Each of us has certain things we desire or want to accomplish. Writing your goals down is one of the most important steps to achieving them. Posting pictures and using other motivational techniques will also help you down the path to achieving those goals.

When a person truly finds what he or she is passionate about and really internalizes it, they can more clearly see their dreams and goals becoming a reality. Henry David Thoreau says it best: "If one advances confidently in the direction of their dreams and endeavors to live the life which they have imagined, they will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."

Tip #3: Take Short Breaks

The Pomodoro Method is a time-management strategy that can work well for students or someone working on computer tasks or collection calls. It was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s and its name comes from the Pomodoro kitchen timer. The simple technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 to 30 minutes separated by a short break. The break is typically just a few minutes long and is used to stretch or get a glass of water or a cup of coffee. To some people, the technique seems counter-productive but the results are often very surprising. You get more done with less burnout.

Tip #4: Reward Yourself for Achieving Your Goals

Any reward you choose should not derail your goals or habits. It can be a challenge to stay consistent when you do not see fast results so having something to look forward to makes it easier to stick with a habit when you are feeling less than motivated. One great technique is to post a picture of your reward in multiple areas like your office, home or any other place where you will see it often.

Tip #5: Review and Reflect

Take time to review and reflect. As a self storage manager, you should always reflect on your performance throughout the sales process with your tenants. What helped you to succeed last month?
